Chapter Twenty-Three

Spencer

To keep myself distracted from all thoughts related to Madison, I come up with a new filing system for the records of all the employees on staff. As I’m rifling through them in the cabinet adjacent to my office door, I hear a soft knock. I freeze. Please be Madison. I warily glance up at the door.

“Come in.”

I hold my breath as the door opens.

As soon as a well-dressed, youngish-looking man steps into sight, my heart sinks.

“Ms. Matheny?” He motions to my name on the door as he says this as if to verify who I am.

“In the flesh.” I move away from the cabinet and make my way towards the stranger in my office. As gay as I am, I have to admit that he’s a handsome fella.

My unidentified visitor smiles at me and extends his arm for a handshake. “Hi. I’m Clay. The company’s secretary.”

Ohh! So this is Clay. I return Clay’s smile with one of my own and shake his hand. “Nice to finally meet you.”

“Same.” He glances around my office. “You know you can decorate this space, right?”

I mentally roll my eyes. Why is everyone here obsessed with interior design? “Yeah. I’ve been told. I just haven’t gotten around to it and honestly, I’m not particularly good at decorating and stuff.”

Clay nods. “Well, lucky for you, I have friend who excels at ‘decorating and stuff.’ She’s really quite the artist. I think maybe you already met her.”

My stomach flops. Madison? “Have I?”

“You have.” His eyes meet mine. “Madison Turner. She came in last Monday for a check.”

“Right. Yeah.” I tilt my head to the side. “So you’re friends with her?” Please don’t hear the suspicion in my voice.

Clay grins. “She’s my bestie.”

“Small world.”

“Isn’t it though?” Clay points to the door with his thumb. “Do you mind if I close this for a sec?”

What is going on? “Sure.”

Clay shuts the door and turns to face me again. “I want to tell you something, but it’s not professional and I’m not looking to lose my job. So between you and me, I never came in here to tell you that my best friend likes you but she’s headstrong and it’s not always one of her most fetching qualities. However, if you’re patient and persistent, you just might get through to her…but I never said any of that to you. Okay?”

Alright. So this dude definitely knows what’s going on with me and Madison and he’s trying to…what is he trying to do? Help me? “Okay. And you’re telling me this…why?”

“Because if there’s some chance that you might like her back, I don’t want you to give up on her.”

“Clay, I appreciate this, but with all due respect, she already gave up on me.”

“Or maybe she just wants you to think that because she’s scared.”

“Scared of what?”

Clay shrugs. “Of everything that may or may not happen next.”

That was vague as fuck. I knit my brows. “Uh huh.”

Clay sighs and I think he’s about to say more but there’s another knock at my door.
